It wasn’t your usual protest group. More lab coats than jeans. More shirts and ties than hoodies.
Hundreds of scientists converged on Parliament Hill September 16 2013 to voice their concern and alarm over the state of public science in Canada. They see a proud profession, critical to the future of the country and the planet, as diminished, demeaned, neglected, scorned and relegated to the scrap heap of public policy. I went up to The Hill to capture on video the rally and the angry, eloquent words of the speakers.

Thank you for recording this message to Canadians. I am glad they are speaking. I am so sad regarding their message. We need a different government, a pro democracy government that will listen and act in accordance with the best evidence presented.
Amen to that!
Great job, well done (especially for a non-scientist.) A lot of people have got to hear this. Let’s hope we can get some action. I doubt it will come from the present government though…
Scientists are not known to be emotional, passionate people, but their deep feelings on these issues says otherwise!
Great stuff, John!… especially the first lad in the white coat who exposes the statistical connection that reducing pure science, actually results in less “industrial” science, one of the Governments sworn goals!!
More stuff that actually shows the government that they are once more “biting off their nose to spite their face” may actually change their policy.
I hope you’re right. They held a similar demonstration last year which attracted some media attention, but I don’t detect much of a change since. At least it’s raising public awareness.
Did you put this on YouTube? How would we get it on FaceBook? More people need to see it.
Yes, it’s on YouTube. Simply paste the direct link to the video in your Facebook status. Here’s the link: http://youtu.be/wsma4tdhL7U
…and rightfully so!
